A nebulising solution was selected as the proposed dosage form because the intended site of action of acetylcysteine is the respiratory tract. Nebulisers are the oldest yet modern method for delivering drugs directly to the lungs (Martin and Finlay, 2015). An aqueous solution was selected because liquid formulations are compatible with nebuliser devices and can be aerosolised to produce droplets suitable for inhalation.
A solution also provides a homogeneous dosage form in which the active pharmaceutical ingredient is dissolved throughout the formulation. Unlike semisolid dosage forms such as creams and ointments, which are designed primarily for application to the skin or mucous membranes, a liquid formulation can be aerosolised for pulmonary delivery. For these reasons, a sterile aqueous nebulising solution was selected as the most appropriate dosage form for the proposed acetylcysteine product.
